Introduction: The prevalence of high-risk and sometimes hidden behaviors such as self-harm during adolescence can have adverse concequences for adolescents’ health, so knowing the factors influencing the prediction of this behavior can be useful for determining preventive and therapeutic measures. The purpose of the study was to predict self-harm behaviors based on self-compassion and frustration intolerance in adolescent girls.
Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, all female students of Tehran high schools in 2022 were the statistical population. Among them, 499 people were selected by multi-stage sampling method and data were collected through demographic questionnaire, self-harm inventory, frustration discomfort scale and self-compassion scale. Data analysis was done using SPSS statistical program.
Results: According to the results, there was an inverse and significant relationship between self-compassion and self-harm behaviors (n=499, r=-0.207, p=0.001) and a direct and significant relationship between frustration intolerance and self-harm behaviors (n=499, r=0.198, p=0.001). Meanwhile, self-compassion was a stronger predictor of self-harm behaviors (with a coefficient of -0.07) than frustration intolerance.
Conclusion: It seems the lack of protective factors along with risk factors can lead to the activation or strengthening of high-risk behaviors, therefore simultaneous attention to protective factors (self-compassion) along with risk factors (failure tolerance) can be more useful for preventing the occurrence of self harm behavior and its destructive consequences.
