Introduction: The purpose of this study was to develop mind reading skills training program and study its effectiveness on empathy and systematic quotient of High Functional Autistic children (HFA).
Methods: The present study had an experimental design with pre-test and post-test with a control group and the aim was to perform an applied research. Of the total target population of children with high-functioning autism, 16 available samples were selected and randomly divided to two groups, experimental (n = 8) and control (n = 8). Auyeung’s Empathy and the systematic questionnaire were applied for assessment of empathy and systematic quotient.
Results: The results showed that theory of mind training program, significantly (p<0.01) led to modification and increase of the empathy quotient and decrease of systematic quotient of HFA students in the experimental group.
Conclusions: Regarding the effectiveness of mind-reading program for enhancing empathy, the systematic use of the program in rehabilitation centers for people with autism disorders is recommended. Although for the application of this intervention program, further investigations are needed.
