Comparison of the Effectiveness of Structural Family Therapy and Transactional Analysis Therapy on Distress Tolerance in Couples with Marital Dissatisfaction

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to comparison of the effectiveness of structural family therapy and transactional analysis therapy on distress tolerance in couples with marital dissatisfaction.
Methods: This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design with control group and follow-up 2 month. The statistical population was all the couples with marital dissatisfaction of in Shiraz city in summer and autumn year 2023. Then, 150 couples with marital dissatisfaction (based on the cut-off point of 104 or less in the Enrich marital satisfaction questionnaire) were introduced, and among the 150 couples examined, 60 couples were eligible by simple randomization in three groups, including the structural family therapy experimental group (20 couples), transactional analysis therapy experimental group (20 couples) and control group (20 couples) were included. Then, experimental groups underwent structural family therapy (10 sessions 90 minutes) and transactional analysis therapy (10 sessions 90 minutes). To collect data Enrich marital satisfaction questionnaire (EMSQ) of Fowers & Olson (1989) and distress tolerance scale (DTS) of Simons and Gaher (2005). Analysis of variance with repeated measures with SPSS software version 28 was used for data analysis.
Results: The results showed that both interventions had a significant effect on distress tolerance (P<0.05). In addition, the results of Bonferroni post hoc test showed that structural family therapy is more effective than transactional analysis therapy on distress tolerance (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be said that structural family therapy and transactional analysis therapy can be used as a treatment method to on distress tolerance in couples with marital dissatisfaction and priority of use in in increase distress tolerance is with structural family therapy.
