Abstract: (15 Views)
Background: Suicide is one of the most serious mental health challenges among adolescents, often influenced by interpersonal factors such as family conflict, particularly parent-adolescent conflict.
Objective: The present study aimed to develop a structural model of suicidal ideation in adolescents by examining the role of parent-adolescent conflict and analyzing the mediating effects of emotion regulation and social support.
Methods: A descriptive-correlational design with structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed. The study population comprised male and female adolescents aged 13–18 in Bandar Abbas, Iran, during the 2024–2025 academic year. A sample of 270 participants was selected through multistage cluster sampling. Data were gathered using the Parent-Adolescent Conflict Questionnaire, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Fleming Social Support Scale, and Beck Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 software and correlation analysis, regression, and path analysis methods.
Results: Findings indicated a strong and significant correlation between parent-adolescent conflict and suicidal ideation ((R = .933, P<0.001). Regression analysis showed that each unit increase in conflict predicted a 1.751-point rise in suicidal ideation scores. Path analysis revealed that parent-adolescent conflict had both a direct effect (path coefficient = 0.607) and indirect effects through reduced social support (−0.947) and weakened emotion regulation (−0.933) on suicidal ideation. The total effect was 0.893, indicating a substantial overall influence.
Conclusion: Family conflict significantly contributes to suicidal ideation in adolescents. However, higher levels of social support and emotion regulation skills can buffer this negative impact. These findings highlight the need for psychological and educational interventions focused on improving family communication, enhancing adolescents’ emotional competencies, and strengthening social support systems to prevent adolescent suicide.
