Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with these disorder face problems in learning, family relationships, and social interaction. This research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of transcranial brain stimulation intervention using direct electric current on executive functions (self-management of time and self-organization-problem solving) of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Methods: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included all elementary school children aged 9 to 11 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in Kerman city in 2023 Among them, 30 people were selected by available sampling method and randomly and by lottery method in two experimental and control groups (15 people in the experimental group and 15 people in the control group). Questionnaires of children's behavior grading scale (parent form) by Swanson et al. (2012) and executive actions of children and adolescents by Barkley (2012) were answered. The subjects in the experimental group received transcranial electrical stimulation of the brain during 8 sessions, two sessions each week for 20 minutes. The research data were analyzed by covariance analysis by SPSS-27 software.
Results: The results showed that before the intervention there was no significant difference between the average score of executive function (self-management of time and self-organization-problem solving) of the intervention and control groups, but there was a statistically significant difference between the average of these scores in the intervention and control groups after the intervention. The mean and standard deviation in the experimental group of time self-management in the post-test was 2.85±35.86 and self-organization-problem solving was 3.07±25.00 (P<0.001).
Conclusions: According to the results of this research, it seems necessary to use transcranial electrical stimulation of the brain to improve executive functions (self-management of time and self-organization-problem solving); Therefore, psychologists and therapists can use transcranial electrical stimulation of the brain along with other treatment methods to reduce the problems of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
