Introduction: Despite the efforts made in the treatment of substance abuse, this phenomenon is still growing, and therefore it is necessary to try to understand the psychological mechanisms involved in the phenomenon of addiction and then target them by adopting a suitable therapeutic approach. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the the effect  of acceptance and commitment therapy on delayed reward discounting, experiential avoidance, and sense of coherence in substance abusers under methadone maintenance treatment.
Methods: The current study was a semi-experimental type with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. Among the people referred to the addiction treatment center of Qazvin city, 30 people were selected as a sample using the convenience sampling method and were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group participated in acceptance and commitment therapy as a group during 8 sessions of 90 minutes, but the control group did not receive any intervention. The research tools were: Monetary-Choice Questionnaire, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and Antonovsky’s Sence of Coherence Scale. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance test.
Results: The results showed that the scores of delayed reward discounting and experimental avoidance in the experimental group decreased significantly in the post-test phase. Also, the sense of coherence scores in the experimental group increased significantly in the post-test phase (P<0.05).
Conclusions: Acceptance and commitment therapy, using its six main processes, can be used as an effective intervention to reduce delayed reward discounting and experiential avoidance and improve the sense of coherence in people suffering from substance abuse. According to the results of the present study, the use of acceptance and commitment therapy in psychological clinics is recommended as an effective intervention method.
