Introduction: Instagram users are highly vulnerable to developing body dysmorphic disorder. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to investigate the structural model of the relationship between dark personality traits and body dysmorphic disorder in Instagram users with the mediating role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and perfectionism. Methods: This research was a correlational study based on the structural equation modeling method. All students of Islamic Azad University, Central Tehran Branch, in the first semester of the academic year 2025-2026, who used Instagram for an average of more than 2 hours per day, constituted the statistical population of this study. Using theavailable sampling method, 327 of these students were selected and responded to the online form of the Yale-Brown Modified Obsessive-Compulsive Scale for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (1997), Jonason and Webster Dark Personality Traits Questionnaire (2010), Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Questionnaire (1980) and Hewitt and Feltt Multidimensional Perfectionism Questionnaire (1991). Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation coefficient and structural equation modeling. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 and AMOS version 22 software. Results: The direct effect of dark personality traits on body dysmorphic disorder (p<0.05, β = 0.189), obsessive-compulsive symptoms (p<0.05, β = 0.182) and perfectionism (p<0.05, β = 0.180) was positive and significant. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms had a positive and significant direct effect on body dysmorphic disorder (p<0.001, β = 0.226) and perfectionism had a positive and significant direct effect on body dysmorphic disorder (p<0.01, β = 0.213). For the relationship between dark personality traits and body dysmorphic disorder mediated by obsessive-compulsive symptoms, the indirect effect value was 0.18 (p<0.05). Also, for the relationship between dark personality traits and body dysmorphic disorder mediated by perfectionism, the indirect effect value was calculated to be 0.15 (p<0.05). Also, the model fit indices showed that the research model has a good fit. Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded that dark personality traits affect body dysmorphic disorder in Instagram users through the mediation of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and perfectionism. In other words, an increase in dark personality traits leads to an increase in obsessive-compulsive symptoms and perfectionism, and this ultimately causes the appearance of body dysmorphic disorder symptoms in Instagram users.
