Introduction: Staying away from the family in student environment associated with pressures such as sense of poverty, lack of social support and compatibility issues. This study examines the relationship between family function and self-differentiation with homesickness of dormitory girl students. Methods: The statistical Society of this study included all non-graduate students of Islamic Azad University of Tehran. The sample group included 180 female students who were randomly selected. The research method was descriptive and correlational. Family Assessment questionnaire (FAD), homesickness questionnaire (Zare, Aminpoor 1390) and differentiation questionnaire was used to measure the variables of this study. The data was analyzed by the methods of correlation and stepwise multivariate regression analysis. Results: Analysis of the data showed a significant correlation between family function and differentiation with homesickness. Based on regression analysis, about 40% of the homesickness variance were defined by self-differentiation, roles, problem solving, general family function, emotional involvement and emotional support variables. Problem-solving, differentiation, roles, affective involvement, general family function and emotional support were the most powerful variables that predict respectively the homesickness of the dormitory girl students. Conclusion: Since the parenting style and family functioning have vital role in the incidence of children's homesickness, it is necessary that counselors and psychologists familiarize families with more efficient parental models and also features of an efficient and balanced family.
