Introduction: Although previous studies have emphasized the role of insecure attachment in relationship quality and aggression, the exact mechanism of this relationship is still not fully understood. In this regard, the aim of the present study was to investigate the mediating role of empathy in the relationship between insecure attachment, interpersonal relationship quality, and aggression in young adults.
Methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational study using structural equations. The statistical population included all individuals referring to clinics and psychological service centers in Tehran in 2025. From the statistical population, 320 individuals were selected through convenience sampling. The research tools were: Attachment Styles Questionnaire, Quality Of Relationships Inventory, Aggression questionnaire, and Emotional Empathy Scale. Pearson correlation, structural equation modeling, and SPSS version 23 and AMOS version 23 software were used to analyze the data.
Results: The findings indicated that the desired model fit.The results indicated that the indirect effect of ambivalent insecure attachment (p<0.05, b = -0.52) and avoidant (p<0.05, b = -0.41) on the quality of interpersonal relationships through the mediating role of empathy was significant. Also, the indirect effect of ambivalent insecure attachment (p<0.05, b = -0.39) and avoidant (p<0.05, b = -0.42) on aggression through the mediating role of empathy was significant.
Conclusion: Insecure attachment affects the quality of interpersonal relationships and aggression, and empathy plays a mediating role in this relationship. Psychological interventions focusing on empathy can help improve interpersonal relationships and reduce aggression in individuals.
