Introduction: Problematic Internet use plays an important role in increasing social isolation in adolescents. Given the importance of this issue, this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy and mentalization-based therapy on social isolation in female students with Internet addiction. Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group with a follow-up period of two months. The statistical population of this study was female high school students in Abarkooh city (Yazd province) in 2024. 45 people were selected from two schools using a non-random sampling method and randomly assigned to three groups: experiment 1 (15 people), experiment 2 (15 people), and control (15 people). A social isolation questionnaire and an internet addiction test were used to collect data. Each of the treatment groups received the interventions as a group during 8 treatment sessions. A repeated measures analysis of variance test was used for statistical analysis. Findings: Findings: The results showed that in the cognitive-behavioral group (MD = 16.66, P = 0.01) and the mentalization-based treatment group (MD = 27.66, P = 0.01), there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores in the control group (MD = 0.13, P = 0.10) (P > 0.05). In the cognitive-behavioral group (MD = 17.27, P = 0.01) and the mentalization-based treatment group (MD = 28.47, P = 0.01), there was a significant difference between pre-test and follow-up scores (P < 0.05); but there was no significant difference between pre-test and follow-up scores in the control group (MD = 0.73, P = 0.10) (P > 0.05). Additionally, there was no significant difference between post-test and follow-up scores in the cognitive-behavioral group (MD = 0.60, P = 0.95) and the mentalization-based treatment group (MD = 0.80, P = 0.10), indicating stability of changes in the treatment groups. Furthermore, there was a significant difference between the two treatment groups of cognitive-behavioral therapy and mentalization-based treatment (MD = 8.13, P = 0.03). In fact, mentalization-based treatment had a greater effect than cognitive-behavioral therapy on reducing social isolation. Conclusion: Overall, it can be concluded that cognitive behavioral therapy and mentalization-based therapy interventions were effective in reducing social isolation; however, the effect of mentalization-based therapy was greater than that of cognitive behavioral therapy.
