Introduction: Nurses due to job stress and pressure experience decreased distress tolerance and psychological well-being. Therefore, the aim of this study was determine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy on distress tolerance and psychological well-being of oncology ward nurses.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of this study was all oncology ward nurses of public hospitals of Sari city in the spring season of 2025 year. Number of 40 people of oncology ward nurses according to the inclusion criteria were selected by available sampling method and randomly divided into two equal groups. The experimental group underwent 12 sessions of 90 minute by cognitive behavioral therapy for three months (one session per week), and the control group remained on the waiting list for training. The data of this study were collected with the Distress Tolerance Scale and Revised Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire and analyzed with the methods of chi-square and multivariate analysis of covariance in SPSS version 27 software.
Results: The results of this research showed that there was no significant difference between the mean components of distress tolerance and psychological well-being of oncology ward nurses in the experimental and control groups in the pre-test phase (P>0.05), but there was a significant difference between all of them in the post-test phase (P<0.001). Also, cognitive behavioral therapy improved all components of distress tolerance (increased tolerate emotional distress, subjective appraisal of distress, and effort to alleviate the distress, and reduced attention absorbed by distressing emotions) and all components of psychological well-being (increased autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relationships with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance) in oncology nurses (P<0.001).
Conclusions: According to the results of the present study, health professionals and therapists can use cognitive behavioral therapy along with other treatment methods to improve the psychological characteristics of nurses, especially increasing distress tolerance and psychological well-being.
