Introduction: Empowering mothers with disabled children is of great importance in order to prevent psychological harm; in this regard, the present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of compassion-focused therapy and emotion-focused therapy on sleep quality in mothers with disabled children referring to welfare counseling centers in Izeh city.
Methodology: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group with a two-month follow-up. The statistical population was mothers of physically disabled children who referred to the counseling and psychological services centers of the Izeh city welfare department during the first six months of 2024. In the present study, a sample of 45 people was selected using the convenience sampling method and then randomly assigned to three groups of 15 people. The Petersburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; Buysse et al., 1989) was used to collect data. Each of the intervention groups underwent group treatment for 8 90-minute sessions. Data analysis was performed using repeated measures analysis of variance in SPSS-25 software.
Findings: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the three groups (F=7.15, P=0.01, µ=0.29). In fact, the findings showed that the sleep quality score in the intervention groups compared to the control group decreased significantly at the 0.05 level of error in the pre-test, post-test and follow-up; however, there was no significant difference between the two treatment groups in the post-test and follow-up scores (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that both treatments were equally effective in improving the sleep of mothers with disabled children who referred to welfare counseling centers in Izeh city; it is suggested that these interventions be used to improve the sleep quality of these mothers, considering the conditions and facilities of the treatment centers.
