Abstract
Introduction:Today, the prevalence of substance abuse among our youth and adolescents has reached alarming levels, so that schools are directly affected. Protecting society from this threat is very important. The aim of the present study was to predict students' attitudes towards addiction based on the satisfaction of basic psychological needs with the mediating role of frustration intolerance and difficulty in regulating emotions.
Method:The present study was a correlational study using structural equation modeling (SEM). Test analysis was performed using SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24 software. The statistical population of the study was 388 second-year high school students (girls/boys) in Bandar Turkmen city in the year 2014-2015, who were selected using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Data were collected using measurement tools including the Basic Psychological Needs Questionnaire (LaGuardia, Deci, & Ryan, 2000), Harrington's Intolerance of Frustration Questionnaire (2005), Gratz and Romer's Difficulty in Emotional Regulation Scale (2004), and the Delaware Drug Attitudes Questionnaire (2004).
Findings: The direct effect of the need for autonomy on attitudes towards addiction (β = -0.12, p< 0.46), frustration intolerance (β = -0.30, p< 0.35), and difficulty in emotional regulation (β=-0.04,p<0.83) was not significant. The direct effect of the need for relatedness on attitudes towards addiction (β = -0.16, p < 0.48) was positive and no significant effect was observed. However, the direct effect of the need for competence on attitudes towards addiction (β = -0.41, p < 0.02), frustration intolerance (β = -1.58, p <0.00),and difficulty in emotional regulation (β = -1.52, p< 0.00) was negative and significant. The effect of the need for relatedness on frustration intolerance (β = -1.47, p< 0.01) and difficulty in emotional regulation (β =-1.4, p < 0.00) was positive and significant. Also, the fit indices showed that the research model has a good fit. Other findings of the study showed that frustration intolerance and difficulty in emotional regulation play a mediating role between the two variables of need for competence and attitude towards addiction.
Conclusion: The results of the study provide new understanding of the effective factors in preventing addiction. In light of the findings of the present study, it is necessary to expand psychological education in high schools to improve basic psychological needs, promote emotional regulation, and tolerate frustration in adolescents to prevent attitudes toward addiction.
