Introduction: The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a Learning to BREATHE (L2B) program on self-compassion and symptoms of anxiety disorders in adolescents.
Methods: The present study was an experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with an active control group. The statistical population included all high school students in Ardabil during the 2024-2025 academic year. From this population, 60 adolescents (30 girls and 30 boys) were selected through cluster random sampling and randomly assigned to either the L2B group or the control group. To measure the study variables, the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS; 26 items, score range: 26-130) and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED; 41 items, score range: 0-82) were used. The intervention group received L2B over six weeks, while the second group simultaneously engaged in daily. The collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) in SPSS version 26.
Results: In girls, the intervention significantly affected self-compassion (ΔM=7.98, η² = 0.34, p < 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (ΔM= -7.68, η² = 0.61, p < 0.001). Similarly, in boys, the intervention significantly affected self-compassion (ΔM: 7.25, η² = 0.36, p < 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (ΔM: -9.65, η² = 0.62, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the L2B program is effective in enhancing self-compassion and reducing anxiety symptoms in adolescents and can be used as a preventive intervention in the general adolescent population.
