Introduction: One of the common emotional problems in adolescents is the increasing anger during adolescence, which is related to their ability in emotional intelligence. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to develop and validate an emotional intelligence skills training package based on an emotion-focused approach and to examine its effectiveness on anger control in adolescents.
Methods: The present research method was a mixed type (qualitative-quantitative). In the qualitative part of the research, an exploratory method with a review of sources was used, and in the quantitative part, a semi-experimental method with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group with a two-month follow-up was used to examine the effectiveness of the developed package. The statistical population of the study included female adolescent students living in District 2 of Tehran in 2024-2025. Initially, 34 of this population were selected through available sampling and randomly assigned to two groups (17 adolescent girls in each group) by drawing lots. The research instruments were the Spielberger Anger Questionnaire (SAQ). Multivariate analysis of covariance and SPSS version 25 software were used to analyze the data.
Results: In the qualitative part of the study, an emotional intelligence package based on an emotion-focused approach was prepared in 10 sessions of approximately 90 minutes, and its content validity was 0.92. The results of multivariate analysis of covariance showed that the package developed on some anger control subscales (feeling of anger, feeling the need to verbally express anger, internalizing anger, and controlling outbursts) had a significant and sustainable effectiveness (P<0.05).
Conclusion: These results indicate that psychologists can use the emotional intelligence skills training package based on an emotion-focused approach to improve adolescents' anger control.
