Introduction: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can influence the patients’ cognitive, emotional and psychological processes in addition to the physical problems that appropriate cognitive therapies should be applied to decrease these damages. Therefore, the present study was conducted aiming to investigate the interpersonal and social rhythm (IPSRT) on IBS symptoms, pain anxiety and depression in the people with IBS.
Methods: The research design was a quasi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test, and 3 months of follow-up. Of the patients who were referred to gastroenterology clinics in Dezful city in 2024, 30 patients with IBS were randomly divided into two groups; IPSRT group and control group. The experimental group underwent rhythm therapy as a group during twelve sessions (two sessions of 45 minutes each week). IBS Symptom Severity Scale (IBS-SSS), Pain Anxiety Questionnaire and Goldberg Depression Scale were completed in pretest, post-test, and follow-up stages by the patients and data were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance using SPSS-25 software.
Results: The variable scores of symptoms severity, pain anxiety and depression in experimental group was significantly lower than the control group (p<0.01) and the effect of the therapeutic plan persisted until the follow-up stage.
Conclusions: Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy can be effective as a new intervention in reducing symptoms, pain anxiety, and depression in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Therefore, psychological treatment is essential for the management of these patients.
