Introduction: Treatment adherence is one of the most important challenges for substance abusers, which is related to various factors. One of the factors that have received less attention is the role of family support in treatment adherence in this group of people. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between treatment adherence and family support in substance abusers undergoing treatment.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted cross-sectionally in the year 2022 in the city of Takab in Iran. The participants were 172 substance abusers under treatment who were referred to addiction treatment centers affiliated with the welfare organization, and who were selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, adherence to treatment (MATQ), and social support from family (PSS-Fa) instruments. Data were analyzed using SPSS-22 software. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the data. The level of statistical significance was set at P ≤0.01.
Results: A total of 172 substance abusers participated in this study. 45.9% of the participants were in the age range of 30 to 40 years and most of them were male (88.4%). The participants' average scores of treatment adherence and family support were 19.52±72.31 and 4.16±13.38, respectively. Pearson's correlation test showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between treatment adherence and its dimensions with family support (P<0.001, r=0.759).
Conclusions: In this study, there is a direct relationship between treatment adherence and family support in addicts undergoing treatment. Treatment adherence in substance abusers undergoing treatment is an important health issue related to family support. It seems that identifying different dimensions of family support in this group of people through qualitative and quantitative studies can be helpful.
