Introduction: Nomophobia syndrome, like any other phobia, requires attention and treatment, especially among adolescents. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy on difficulty in emotion regulation and impulsivity in adolescents with symptoms of nomophobia syndrome.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a two-month follow-up, including a control group. The statistical population included all female high school students in Dezful in the academic year 2025-26. A sample of 60 eligible individuals was selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly assigned to three groups of 20. The Difficulty in Emotion Regulation and Impulsivity Scale was used to collect data. Emotion-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy were each administered separately in 8 90-minute group sessions. Data analysis was performed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and a Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS version 25.
Results: The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the three groups for the variables of difficulty in emotion regulation (P=0.05, F=4.62, η2=0.18) and impulsivity (P=0.05, F=4.62, η2=0.18). The findings from the Bonferroni post hoc test showed that the scores of difficulty in emotion regulation and impulsivity in the intervention groups were significantly improved compared to the control group in the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up (P<0.01); however, there was no significant difference between the two treatment groups in the post-test and follow-up scores (P<0.05).
Conclusions: According to the research findings, it can be concluded that both emotion-focused therapy and dialectical behavior therapy were able to have a positive effect on improving difficulty in regulating emotions and impulsivity in adolescents with nomophobia syndrome. Therefore, specialists, researchers, and therapists in this field can use these interventions as effective options for these individuals.
